If you're eligible I would respond yes to the invitation by Abbott World Marathon Majors to enter its drawing for a race entry.
Abbott is having three more drawings for the series' Spring 2024 races.
Nov. 15 - 2024 Tokyo Marathon on March 3 - Must have run at least FOUR other Majors and have never finished Tokyo Marathon.
Nov. 29 - 2024 Boston Marathon on April 15 - Must have run at least FOUR other Majors and have never officially finished Boston Marathon. (If you finished the race after the cutoff time then it's not an official finish and you may be eligible to enter the drawing).
Dec. 12 - 2024 London Marathon on April 21 - Must have run at least THREE other Majors and have never finished the London Marathon.

Frequently Asked Questions
-How do I enter one of the drawings?
Go to Abbott World Marathon Majors website and create a profile if you haven't already. Claim all of your Majors finishes. If you're running Berlin, Chicago and/or New York this fall be sure to claim those finishes too. If you're eligible, then Abbott a few days to a week or so before the drawing will email you an invite to the email address Abbott has on file for you. (Check your spam). To enter the drawing, you must click the link, fill out the online form and click a submit button.
-What are the odds of getting an entry through one of these drawings?
It's not known. Abbott has never released how many people have entered these drawings, which we would need to know to calculate the odds. Abbott used to release the number of entries through the drawings that were available but it apparently took that information down for the drawings this year. Based on the information posted, it appears each drawing is for 100 to 500 bibs with the least availability for Tokyo and Boston. Anecdotally, it appear the odds depending on the drawing are decent. Maybe at least 1 in 5 or better. However, I anticipate that all things staying equal, the odds will decrease over time as more people accumulate more Majors and more people become eligible to enter the drawings. That's why I recommend people enter the drawings if they can unless they have a major conflict like expecting a child or a family wedding.
If I'm drawn for an entry but I'm not available to run that race, can I defer to the race the following year?
No. It's a sponsor entry. Sponsor entries for any Major seldom can be deferred. And these sponsor entries can NOT be deferred. You use it or you lose it. The fee is nonrefundable.
What's the cost of these entries?
The entries are not free. It varies by the race. For Boston, it's $400. For Tokyo, it's been the standard entry fee which for 2024 is $160. But no more than roughly $400.
Will these drawings become an annual event?
We don't know if drawings will take place after 2024. We also don't know if Abbott will continue to be the series sponsor after this year. But if I had to guess based on the fact Abbott has committed to having drawings this year for races next year and other sponsorship agreements, that Abbott will remain a sponsor until at least 2024. We also don't know how long the races will continue to make entries or hundreds of entries available for these drawings.
Can I win more than one of these drawings in a calendar year?
The answer a few weeks ago seemed to be no. But a member got an email from Abbott indicating they're rethinking this policy.
Is there anything I can do to improve my odds of being drawn?
Yes. You have the option of signing up for Abbott's virtual half marathons for about $50 (Correction: a member says it's $45). For each one you complete you have the option to add an additional entry to one of the drawings.
Why is Abbott doing these drawings?
I can only speculate. But all sponsors of all the Majors get a certain number of sponsor bibs they can often distribute anyway they see fit. And these bibs apparently come from Abbott's allocation.

Nike.
2023-09-11 18:37:56

Abbott is trying to promote its brand through its sponsorship of the Majors and the Six Star program. It's a major pharmaceutical/health devices like blood sugar monitors and Covid tests like BinaxNow/nutrition drinks and energy bars/baby formula company, based in a suburb north of Chicago, Illinois, that wants its brand to be associated with health, wellness, athletic excellence and athletic achievement and its sponsorship is one of the means by which it's trying to do that.
