String theory is an area of theoretical physics that routinely receives wide media attention. However, many of the popular science explanations are based on misconceptions or misnomers, such as "general relativity is incompatible with quantum mechanics". This talk will cover the following:

— A short introduction to theoretical physics and some of the problems it tackles.
— The problem of quantum gravity and the reasons why many physicists believe gravity should be quantized.
— How string theory addresses quantum gravity.
— Some of the pros and cons of string theory and why it’s currently not a very popular subject in the theoretical physics community.

You don't need to know much physics or math to understand this talk. Knowing that protons and electrons are particles is enough!

Misha Evtikhiev is a researcher in computer science software engineering at JetBrains Research. Before joining JetBrains, he was a theoretical physicist at Weizmann Institute in Israel. He did research on superconformal field theories in 3 to 6 dimensions and little string theories, and defended his PhD thesis in July 2020.
