The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari (1920) is one of the masterpieces of German expressionism and of the history of cinema. A film that would doubtless have been improved by the existence of sound, since it is far from being a 'silent' film. The mastery with which Robert Wiene manages the atmosphere, through a setting that seems to take on a life of its own, has led us to select it for the opening of this new cycle of visual poetry.
